Delusions are common in every kind of mental illness, but they come in different forms. In paranoid schizophrenia you might believe you are being controlled by aliens, in depression you might believe you are a terrible person, in OCD you might believe if you don’t carry out one of the compulsions something bad will happen. Sometimes you consciously know the delusions are false- like with OCD you KNOW nothing bad will happen if you don’t do the compulsion, but you don’t believe it because of the delusion. People with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder might have a harder time realizing their delusions are false because they are at risk for a break from reality, or psychosis, so the lines between reality and your perception of it can become skewed.
